The Elevator

This was written by me in the early 2000’s for a college class. I believe it was a creative writing class for the game development program I was in. I know now there is a movie called The Elevator, but I’m pretty sure I wrote this before that was titled, or I hadn’t seen that movie yet. So it is just a coincidence that it is the same.

*ding* The elevator rings as it reaches the ground floor.  The door slides open and the scent of death fills the lobby.  Fyre can’t believe what he sees in the elevator in front of him.  The inside was a disaster.  The panel was ripped off the wall and the ceiling had been pulled down.  The whole room had been covered with blood, and on the floor was a pile of clothes and bones where two people had once been standing.  *ding* the second elevator arrives.  Fyre’s heart starts to race.  What was coming out of the elevator?  Was it what had created the horrific scene in front of him?  The door slides open and out stumbles a well dressed business man covered in blood.  The man falls to the floor and Fyre runs over to see if he can help.

“Hey buddy, are you ok?  What caused all this?”  Fyre asks the businessman.  “The demons … the … the demons are coming!” the man mutters as he expires.

“Demons?  What the hell is this guy talking about?  Their has to be some logical explanation for what has happened here!  I must be dreaming.  I sure hope that I am dreaming, but this all seems way to real” Fyre thinks to himself.  Suddenly he hears a noise behind him.  The hairs on the back of his neck stand up and he quickly turns in the direction that the sound came from.  Their in front of him stood an eight foot tall beast.  It looked to be brown and covered with 2 inch spikes.  It had a huge mouth with foot long, razor sharp fangs.  It took a step forward and Fyre turned around and ran into the elevator that the man had stumbled out of and hit the button to close the doors.

The beast scrambled to get its big hands in between the closing doors, but it wasn’t fast enough.  It just crashed into the outer doors with enough force to knock Fyre off of his feet.  Fyre then jumps up to his feet and scrambled to push the button to bring him down to the underground parking lot.  To Fyre’s surprise the elevator started moving up and not down.

“What the hell, what the hell” Fyre says out loud to himself.  Up and up the elevator rises, slowly, slower than usual. “Twenty-one, Twenty-two, Twenty-three, why is this happening?!  I don’t want to go to the roof!  I just want to get out of here!”

The elevator stops but the doors do not open. “Hello?  Hello, is there anybody out there?  I seem to be trapped in the elevator and need some help getting out” Fyre cries out desperately.

“Muahaha,  the demons have awaken to feast, and not a soul shall be spared” something whispers.  Then all of a sudden, the elevator drops.  Down and down, it falls straight from the roof of the building.  Fyre gets lifted off of the floor and slams into the ceiling.

“This is it” he thinks to himself.  The elevator comes to an abrupt stop, Fyre is flung to the floor and gets knocked out cold.

He wakes up, covered in blood and feeling like he had just been hit by a Mac Truck.  Fyre lays still for a minute to try and collect himself.

“How long have I been out for?  What floor am I on?  What the hell is happening to me? … And what the hell is laying on my legs?!”

Fyre had just come to the realization that he isn’t alone.  In his haste to get away from the monster, he didn’t notice the dead security guard laying in the corner of the elevator.  Fyre kicked the dead guard off of his legs to break himself free.  *clunk*, something heavy and metallic lands on the floor.  Fyre reaches for what made the sound, and after a couple of seconds of fumbling around in the dark he found what he was looking for.

“I was right, it is a gun.  I hope it provides more protection for me than it did that guard.”  With that being said the lights flickered and turned on, but the doors stayed shut.  Fyre frantically tries to pry the doors open, but to no avail.  He starts to panic “Shit … shit!  I’m stuck in here and I don’t even know what is happening!”

One of the demons growls off in the distance “The game has begun, and nobody shall survive … not even you Fyre!”

The elevator door slowly slides open, and Fyre readies his gun and prepares to leave the elevator.  As Fyre steps out of the elevator, the doors slam shut behind him and starts to fall.  The elevator slams into the basement, which sends out a shockwave that violently shakes the entire building.  Fyre fell to the ground.  After getting back up to his feet, Fyre starts to make his way to the emergency stairs that should lead down to the underground parking lot so he can get into his car and go home.

… That is … if he can escape first …
